"Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus" and Other Magic Phrases and Spells Revealed! by H. Granger

The language of the wizarding world is, indeed, fascinating.Being a Muggle and a voracious devourer of books, I could not help admiring the sheer complexity and charming effects of the incantations, spells, and name-words used in Harry Potter's world.

By some good fortune, I had a chance-- and rare-- encounter with the renowned magilexicographer, Professor Wilbur Wordsmith, at The Three Broomsticks during one of my rare trips to Hogsmeade. An unusually chatty man, Prof. Wordsmith animatedly discussed his plan to collaborate with the creator of Rowling's Dictionary of Wizarding Words, J.K. Rowling, in his attempt to introduce magilexicography to Muggle universities.

Magilexicography is the study of the conceptual meanings and etymology of wizarding words and their organization into what is known as the wizarding lexicon. Prof. Wordsmith happens to be a Muggle-born professor of Grammatica and Magilexicography at the Wicca Academy of Magic and Sorcery (location unplottable).

Anyway, six butterbeers later, Prof. Wordsmith ended up giving me a herculean task: find for him the origins of certain incantations, wizarding words and phrases, and to publish it at Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Charming troll, that professor. He said he is retiring in a fortnight and couldn’t wait to spend his endless holidays with his dragons and hippogriffs on his farm in Ottery St. Catchpole. So, I indulged the man and devoted about 10 feet of parchment, 3 bottles of ink, and 4 hours at the Hogwarts library (to the great displeasure of Madam Irma Pince).

Hereunder is a list of certain wizarding words and phrases and their interesting origins (etymology), which I had to cull from centuries-old Latin and Greek books at the library's Antiquity Section:

ALOHOMORA: a.k.a. "Unlocking Spell," originated from West African Sidiki dialect used in geomancy, which has the literal meaning, "Friendly to thieves."

ANIMAGUS: from the Latin anima, meaning "soul or spirit," and Greek magos, "a man with magical powers."

BLUDGER: from the English verb "bludgeon," or "to hit somebody repeatedly with a heavy object."

CRUCIATUS: from Medieval Latin cruciata, or "cross," an instrument of torture during the Roman Empire Era.

DEMENTOR: from late 18th century Latin, dement= "de"= away + "ment"= mind, that is, "driven out of one's mind," which is the Dementor's expertise.

DISSENDIUM: from Latin dissocio, meaning "to part or to separate."

ENGORGIO: from the English verb, "engorge," meaning "to fill."

EXPECTO PATRONUM: from classical Latin, "Expecto patronum," which exactly translates to "I await a protector."

EXPELLIARMUS: from Latin expellere= "to expel, to thrust away," and arma= "weapons of war."

FELIX FELICIS: from Latin felix, meaning "happy or lucky," and felicis, "of luck."

FIDELIUS CHARM: from Latin fidelis, meaning "loyalty."

FINITE INCANTATEM: from Latin finio= "to put an end," and cantio= "enchantment."

FLOO POWDER: named after the floo plant, from whence it is extracted, discovered by a witch named Ignatia Wildsmith, circa 13th century.

HIPPOGRIFF: from Greek, hippos= "horses," and griffin, a mythical monster with the head and wings of an eagle and the body and tail of a lion.

HOMENUM REVELIO: from Latin homo/hominis= "person" and revelo, "to unveil."

HORCRUX: possibly derived from French word dehors, meaning "outside," and crux, or "essence."

HOUSE ELF: possibly from the English phrase "house help."

IMPERIO: from Latin imperare, "to order or to command."

LEVICORPUS: from the Latin verb, levo= "to raise" and corpus= "body."

LUMOS: from Latin lumen, meaning "light."

MUGGLE: derived from the slang word, "mug," meaning "a gullible person." Rowling added a syllable "-gle," to soften the word, as she wanted to suggest "both foolishness and lovability."

NOX: from classical Latin nox, meaning "night."

OBLIVIATE: from Latin oblivium, meaning "forgetfulness."

OPPUGNO: from classical Latin oppugno, which means "to attack."

PATRONUS: from archaic Latin patronus, meaning "father, protector, guardian."

PRIORI INCANTATEM: from Latin prior= "former" and incanto= "to enchant."

SQUIB: from the English word "squib," meaning "someone insignificant" or "a faulty firecracker."

STUPEFY: from the Latin word stupefacio, meaning "to make senseless."

VERITASERUM: from Latin veritas= "truth" and serum= "liquid."

WOLFSBANE: coined from "wolf's bane," meaning "a wolf's deadly poison" or "a wolf's ruin."

Harry Potter Prequel

The 800 word Harry Potter Prequel that JK Rowling wrote for the Waterstone’s “What’s Your Story?” Charity benefit. She had it written with her own hand writing, but i took the opportunity to write for you here online. It is set about three years before the birth of Harry James Potter.

The speeding motorcycle took the sharp corner so fast in the darkness that both policemen in the pursuing car shouted,”Whoa!” Sergeant Fisher slammed his large foot on the brake, thinking that the boy who was riding pillion was sure to be flung under his wheels; however, the motorbike made the turn without seating either of its riders, and with a wink of its red tail lights, vanished up the narrow side street.
“We’ve got ‘em now!” cried PC Anderson excitedly. “That’s a dead end!”
Leaning hard on the steering wheel and crashing his gears, Fisher scraped half the paint off the flank of the car as he forced it up the alleyway in pursuit. There in the headlights sat their quarry, stationary at last after a quarter of an hour’s chase. The two riders were trapped between a towering brick wall and the police car, which was now crawling towards them like some growling luminous-eyes predator.
There was so little space between the car doors and the walls of the alley that Fisher and Anderson had difficulty extricating themselves from the vehicle. It injured their dignity to have to inch, crab-like,towards the miscreants. Fisher dragged his generous belly along the wall, tearing buttons off his shirt as he went, and finally snapping off the wing mirror with his backside.
“Get off the bike!” he bellowed at the smirking youths, who sat basking in the flashing blue light as though enjoying it.
They did as they were told, finally pulling free from the broken wing mirror, Fisher glared at them. They seemed to be in their late teens. The one who had been driving had long black hair, his insolent good looks reminded Fisher unpleasantly of his daughter’s guitar-playing, layabout boyfriend. The second boy also had black hair, though his was short and stuck up in all directions; he wore glasses and a broad grin. Both were dressed in t-shirts emblazoned with a large golden bird; the emblem, no doubt, of some deafening, tuneless rock band.
“No helmet!” Fisher yelled, pointing from one uncovered head to the other. “Exceeding the speed limit by-by a considerable amount!” (In fact, the speed registered had been greater than Fisher was prepared to accept that any motorcycle could travel.) “Failure to stop for the police!”

“We’d have loved to stop for a chat,” said the boy in glasses,”only we were trying-”
“Don’t get smart-you two are in a heap of trouble!” snarled Anderson. “Names!”
“Names?” repeated the long-haired driver.”Er-Well, let’s see. There’s Wilberforce…Bathsheba…Elvendork…”
“And what’s nice about that one is, you can use it for a boy OR a girl,” said the boy in glasses.
“Oh, our names, did you mean?” asked the first, as Anderson spluttered with rage.”You should’ve said! This here is James Potter, and I’m Sirius Black!”
“Things’ll be seriously black for you in a minute, you cheek little-”
But neither James nor Sirius was paying attention. They were suddenly as alert as gundogs, staying past Fisher and Anderson, over the roof of the police car, at the dark mouth of the alley. Then, with identical, fluid movements, they reached into their back pockets.
For the space of a heartbeat both policemen imagined guns gleaming at them, but a second later they saw that the motorcyclists had drawn nothing more than-
“Drumsticks?” jeered Anderson. “Right pair of jokers, aren’t you? Right, we’re arresting you on a charge of–”
But Anderson never got to name the charge. James and Sirius had shouted something incomprehensible, and the beams from the headlights had moved.
The policemen wheeled around, then staggered backwards. Three men were flying-actually flying- up the alley on broomsticks-and at the same moment, the police car was rearing up on its back wheels.
Fisher’s knee bucked; as he sat down hard; Anderson tripped over Fisher’s legs and fell on top of him, as flump-bang-crunch- they heard the men on brooms slam into the suspended car and fall, apparently insensible, to the ground, while broken bits of broomstick clattered down around them.
The motorbike had roared into life again. His mouth hanging open, Fisher mustered the strength to look back at the two teenagers.
“Thanks very much!” called Sirius over the throb of the engine.”We owe you one!”
“Yeah, nice meeting you!” said James. “And don’t forget: Elvendork! It’s unisex!”
There was an earth-shaking crash, and Fisher and Anderson threw their arms around each other in fright; their car had just fallen back to the ground. Now it was the motorcycle’s turn to rear. Before the policemen’s disbelieving eyes, it took off into thin air: James and Sirius zoomed away into the night sky, their tail light twinkling behind them like a vanishing ruby.

From the prequel I am not working on-but that was fun! J.K. Rowling.2008

What ever happened beyond the Deathly Hallows; Interview by RpSp

We all have read in the Daily Prophet on what happened after the death of the Dark Lord nineteen years later with the boy who lived. But more over, i was able to talk to Bathilda Bagshot's Successor in writing the updated "Hogwarts; a History." and she had agreed to answer some of my questions of what else happened nineteen years later.

Who was the character JK Rowling stated she gave a "reprieve" to in the final novel?

Arthur Weasley was initially intended to die in the Battle of Hogwarts, but Rowling changed her mind. In the end, Lupin and Tonks died instead. She stated she sobbed when she made her final decision.

Who did Draco Malfoy marry?

Draco and Astoria had one son, Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy.

Who killed Remus Lupin?

Antonin Dolohov struck down Lupin, and Bellatrix Lestrange eliminated her niece Nymphadora, leaving little Teddy to be raised by his grandmother, Andromeda.

What was the ultimate fate of Florean Fortescue?

Althought she did not give a reason, JK Rowling said that Fortescue was indeed murdered by the Death Eaters.

Who did Cho Chang marry?

Nothing is known of the man Cho married, or whether they had children together.

Dolores Umbridge was imprisoned in Azkaban for what crime?

Although she did try slipping Veritaserum to Harry as well as attempting to use the Cruciatus Curse on him, and she threatened Muggleborns with the Dementor's Kiss if they didn't cooperate during her interrogations, her overall sentence was for general Crimes Against Muggleborns. Incidentally, the Dementors no longer guard Azkaban, although what happened to them has not been said.

What is Dumbledore's Boggart?

Dumbledore's Boggart is the dead body of his little sister Ariana. It is probably because of the tremendous sorrow and guilt he felt, because he never knew if he was the one who fired the spell that killed her.

Harry has no contact with the Dursleys whatsoever?

Nope, It's highly unlikely that Harry speaks with his aunt and uncle, but he and Dudley are on what my historian describes as "Christmas Card" terms. She also says that every now and then Harry and his family will visit Dudley and his family...something that James, Lily, and Albus are NEVER happy about!

Voldemort would have allowed Lily Potter to live if she had stepped aside and allowed him to kill Harry?

My historian stated that if Lily had done as he ordered and moved out of the way, Voldemort would have spared her life, as Snape had asked him to.

Two more small tidbits about the Potters: they were asked to join the Death Eaters, but some in Voldemort's company felt they were too close to Dumbledore.
Dumbledore also knew what had happened on the night they were murdered because there was an alarm spell on the house.
Many people have also wondered what Aunt Petunia stopped herself from saying the night the Dursleys left. According to my historian, she was going to say "I know what you're going up against. I hope everything turns out all right", or something to that effect.

Did Ginny Weasley work for the Daily Prophet as the Columnist for Magical Advice?

No, After leaving Hogwarts, Ginny played for the Holyhead Harpies and she was loved by the fans. Ginny played for the team for a few years before retiring from Quidditch to have, and look after, her children with Harry. The children were named James, Albus and Lily. After raising the children she became the Senior Quidditch Correspondent for the "Daily Prophet".

Did Rita Skeeter ever write for the Daily Prophet after the death of Lord Voldemort?

Rita Skeeter still wrote for the Daily Prophet after Voldemort died. She also wrote a biography of Severus Snape and Harry Potter. The ministry never found out about her being an unregistered animagus, and she is thought to be the only unregistered animagus in the world.

Where did Percy work after the death of Voldemort?

Percy became a high ranking official under Kingsley Shacklebolt. Percy eventually decided to take the side of the rest of his family and resigned from the corrupt Ministry of Magic.

What happened to Firenze the Centaur?

Firenze was eventually allowed to return to the herd. The rest of the herd were forced to admit that Firenze's actions towards humans were actually honourable, not dishonourable.

Who did Neville Longbottom marry?

Neville Longbottom married Hannah Abbot. Once Hannah left Hogwarts, she became the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron. Neville became the Herbology Professor. Neville lived with her above the pub, which his students thought was cool. He showed his D.A. coin to his admiring pupils.

What happened to the Resurrection Stone after Harry dropped it going into the forest?

Harry dropped it on the way to face Voldemort in the forest. He told Dumbledore's portrait that he wasn't going to looking for it again. J.K Rowling said that it was squashed into the ground by a centaur running to aid the fighters at the Battle of Hogwarts and was never found again.

How many children did Hagrid have?

Hagrid never married and had no children. The main reason for this is that there are not many people who would marry him. The only woman he met who was also a half-giant was more sophisticated than he. That was of course Madame Maxime.

Who appeared on a chocolate frog card?

They all did. Harry did appear on a chocolate frog card. He was credited for slaying the darkest wizard of all time. Hermione and Ron also appeared on chocolate frog cards, which Ron described as his finest hour.

Which quidditch team does Harry become the Seeker for?

Harry did not become the Seeker for the Chudley Cannons, he became an Auror at the Ministry of Magic. Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister for Magic, said that anyone who fought at the Battle of Hogwarts could become an Auror without taking their N.E.W.Ts. Hermione returned to Hogwarts to take her N.E.W.Ts, but Harry and Ron did not. Ron also became an Auror, after working alongside George at the joke shop. The Chudley Cannons continued to lose games with no decent players.

Who stole the Marauder's Map from Harry's desk?

Harry did not give the map to any of his children. However James Potter II stole it from Harry's desk, implying that he inherited Harry's slightly reckless streak. James Potter II used the map for some fun and excitement at Hogwarts.

Who's characters' death did NOT help in the creation of a Horcrux?

Morfin Gaunt. Since Morfin died in Azkaban, there was no way his death could have been used to create a Horcrux. Bertha Jorkins' death was used to make Nagini one, (although Dumbledore states in the Half-Blood Prince that Frank Bryce's death made her a Horcrux, my historian has confirmed in interviews that Dumbledore was mistaken, Nagini became a Horcrux before Bryce's murder) Voldemort turned the ring into one when he killed his father, and Moaning Myrtle's death was used for the diary. A muggle beggar was used in turning Slytherin's locket into one, Hepzibah Smith's death turned Hufflepuff's Cup into one, and an Albanian peasant was murdered in order to transform Ravenclaw's Diadem into one.

What house was Teddy Lupin sorted into?

Just like his mother, Teddy Remus Lupin is a Hufflepuff. He's also a Metamorphmagus, but thankfully has never shown any sign of lycanthropy, as his father was afraid he might.

Who did Luna Lovegood end up marrying?

Luna married the great grandson of Newt Scamander, who authored the book "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them". She became the wizarding equivalent of a "naturalist", and had twin sons named Lorcan and Lysander. Over time, however, she finally admitted that there's no such thing as a Crumple-Horned Snorkack.

Did Snape never received a portrait in the Headmaster's office at Hogwarts?

Initially, Snape's portrait did not appear in the office after his death, because he had more or less "resigned" the position when he ran from the castle on the night of the Battle of Hogwarts. But Harry, after viewing the memories Snape had given him, made sure that the public knew just whose side Snape was truly on, and also made sure a portrait of him finally appeared in its rightful place.

Which of the following characters was in love with Voldemort?

Bellatrix Black only married Rodolphus Lestrange because it was expected of her to take a Pureblood husband. Her true affections lay with her Master, although it's doubtful he was capable of returning any feelings of affection or warmth towards her in return.

Who was Harry's godmother?

He had none. Harry's christening was a very hushed, secret affair, with only his parents and Sirius present.

What team did Ginny play Quidditch for?

Ginny played with the Harpies for a time, then retired to raise her children. She then began writing a weekly sports column for "The Daily Prophet".

After the Battle of Hogwarts, who was apppointed Headmaster/Headmistress of Hogwarts?

Professor McGonagall took over as Headmistress following the Battle of Hogwarts, and retired in 2017. There is no information on who replaced her, other than the fact that the new Head of Hogwarts is a Wizard.

Did the Golden Trio all returned to Hogwarts to sit their N.E.W.T. exams?

Only Hermione returned to finish out her seventh year. She now works in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, where she has helped to better the lives of House Elves, as well as overturn centuries worth of oppressive anti-Muggleborn laws. Harry went on to train as an Auror, becoming head of the department. Ron went to work at Weasley's Wizard Wheezes with George for a time, then joined Harry at the Ministry as an Auror himself.

After for almost a day of interview with my historian on the Leaky Cauldron, I really am pleased to inform you all that she has given us more than satisfactory for answers.

And so for the people who i am with here at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place, I raise my goblet to our dear beloved historian, and as we know, more than that.

to JK Rowling:

for the time that you have tickled our sleeping dragons which was called before as our mere imagination!
