Why in the World did Hermione Jean Granger made it to Gryffindor when she can be in Ravenclaw??

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure". This is Rowena Ravenclaw's ultimate motto. Students who belong in her House should be witty and intelligent. They should be quick thinkers. They should be logical and absolutely smart as Rowena Ravenclaw was. So, why in the world did Hermione made it to Gryffindor when she can be in Ravenclaw? Where she can fit in so easily with the people who share the same qualities as she have? So, Why not Ravenclaw? Why out of all the Houses Hermione was placed in Gryffindor? What do you think?
Well in my case, the answer's quite simple. Because Harry and Ron are in Gryffindor. Hermione should be there as well.
Imagine for a moment that Hermione's sorted to a different House, let's say Ravenclaw.. Do you think the bond she would share with Ron and Harry will be as strong and as tight if she's with them in Gryffindor? G.Potter thinks not. Who knows they wouldn't even be friends. Hermione has proven her worth to Harry and Ron so many times that without her they wouldn't have lasted a day, Harry Potter would be already dead.

Let's say for arguments sake that she is in Ravenclaw but she ended up being friends with Harry and Ron, like Luna did. Will it still be the same? Again.. G. Potter thinks not. The kind of friendship Harry, Ron and Hermione had, needed a foundation. And I think it would be difficult for them to build that foundation if she was in a different House. Different House means different friends, different common room, different beliefs. Everything would be different. And it would have been difficult for Jo to make the bond between the 3 effortless and flawless if Hermione did end up being a Ravenclaw. It would become too forced and too staged. So Jo, instead of letting Harry scour around Ravenclaw tower seeking advises from a Ravenclaw girl, she created a character that has all the potential in the world to be in Ravenclaw, but placed her in Gryffindor. Harry's a lot on his shoulders and what Jo could to the least is to give him friends. Friends who are accessible. Friends who are loyal. Friends who could save his ass so many times. Friends that would help him survive and live. So for G.Potter, that is the reason why Hermione Jean Granger is in Gryffindor. Oh... And also, aside from being super intelligent and witty.. Hermione Jean Granger is brave, bold and loyal. Making her quite a Gryffindor too.

Your turn. What do you think? What are the other reasons? I'll be waiting for your comments.

  1. Quite a thought-provoking query, G. Potter. Here's my theory:

Although Hermione Granger "seems" every inch a Ravenclaw, she "willed" to be in Gryffindor. If you can all recall that sorting scene in Book 1, she concentrated on being sorted into Gryffindor, the way Harry did when it was his turn.

The real question here is: Why did Hermione want to be in Gryffindor so bad? On this matter, I have the following theories:

    1. She has read widely about Godric Gryffindor and his accomplishments and qualities, and she is simply awed by him.

    2. She has made friends with Ronald Weasley and Harry Potter en route to Hogwarts, and naturally, she wants to be with them always.

    3. Rowling fucked up the Sorting Hat (and this is the strongest theory), so that it will follow Hermione's bidding. Why would Rowling mess up with the sorting? Because, in view of all the adventures and misadventures of Harry and Ron, they need a brain and a conscience, which is personified by Hermione. She has been the "deux ex machina," the "much-needed help" through all their pursuits. I can fill this page with the life-saving moves of Hermione from Book One to Book Seven. This is why.

Lastly, if Hermione was sorted in Ravenclaw, it would be such a bummer for her. Imagine being stuck in the girl's dormitory with the drama queen, Cho Chang, and the loony Luna Lovegood.

    Thanks for this, G-girl.

  2. Hey there, G.Potter. Here's my take on why Hermione landed in Gryffindor:

Because Harry and Ron need a balancer, a fulcrum. And only a girl like Hermione can accomplish this.

it was actually in the book

Apparently, Hermione did consider first to be in Gryffindor than the rest and Ravenclaw is yet another option.

Just like when Harry was sorted, the Sorting Hat did consider him to be great in Slytherin. The Hat found it difficult sorting Harry to a House since the connection between Harry and Voldermort exists. But then again, Harry said "Not Slytherin, not Slytherin." And so he ended up in Gryffindor because it is where he desires to be. Same as Hermione.

  4. Dear Hedwig,

Splendid exposition! I even forgot that bit about Hermione asking around and reading up about Gryffindor. It was just my theory. So thanks for verifying it.

I also love the bit about "passion rules over reason."

    Stay close, Hedwig.

    Love,

    H. Granger

  5. To G. Potter, H. Granger, and Hedwig:

Wow! You said a lot, while all I could say was a lame statement about Harry and Ron needing a "balancer." Shame on me :)

    You, guys, are good.
